A letter was sent by Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation to Chania Police Directorate with notification to Chania Public Prosecutor’s Office and Municipality of Chania. The letter will also be sent to senior police officers of Hellenic Police’s Headquarters.
We demand that immediate and effective measures are taken so that the phenomenon of animal killing will stop or it will be eliminated. Unfortunately, each year several hundred animals die a horrible death.
We should admit that Hellenic Police has made important steps forward in implementing existing animal laws. However, there is still room for improvement as it was pointed out by executive officers of local police department during a seminar in Chania, organized by General Police Directorate of Crete.
There are some proposals included in this letter but Chania Police Directorate must decide which measures should be taken.
Also, the letter includes statistics which indicate that there are much more to be done by police on animal poisoning and animal abuse of all species in general.
However, it should be mentioned that Chania Police Directorate as well as Crete Police Directorate have an advantage over other Police Headquarters across the country as it has significant activity on animal issues. This is the result of a long-term effort of Cretan animal welfare organizations, together with the fact that police officers indicated their willingness to support these efforts.
