PRESS RELEASE
7/10/2014
It is well known that in July 2013, the Pan-Hellenic Animal and Environmental Federation submitted a petition to the Ministry of the Mercantile Marine and the Aegean, in order to settle the issue of the pets swimming in the sea.
Since then, following a continuous communication with the Port Police General Directorate , as well as the requested clarifications from the Ministry of Rural Development & Food and the Ministry of Health, today 07-10-2014, a meeting was held at the Office of the Minister of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean, between the Minister, Mr Varvitsiotis and our representatives.
The Minister, to his honor, showed great willingness to cooperate but also a sense of responsibility by being fully informed about what is happening in other countries of Europe, and how they deal with this issue there.
In a climate of good mood and cooperation, we agreed to the proposals that he himself had developed, according to which there would be “pet friendly” beaches across the country, while he has already given command at all port authorities, to list the beaches offered for this purpose.
Of all the beaches, of course , the busiest will be excluded as well as the ones with fee.
At this point we would like to stress, that we all have to show consistency and responsibility. Not only by having our pets on leash while on the beach but by taking care that our pets do not annoy the rest of the swimmers as well as clean up their feces.
It’s up to us to keep our conquests, and to demonstrate to those who up to now had objections, that there is no reason to not let the animals on the beaches.
We thank the Minister for his cooperation, which will continue until the publication of the final decision.
