After years of efforts made by members of the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation a strong blow was achieved against a circuitry of pitbulls breeding and trafficking, a breed widely used in dogfighting.
Recently, two residents of Lavrio were sentenced for passive abuse of their pitbulls after Federation’s complaints. These two people and their company have been breeding pitbulls over the last years and they are connected to dogfighting circuit. On the 3rd of March 2013, one of them was arrested under the derelict for dogfighting in the city of Katerini and he was convicted.
It was 2011 when our Federation received complaints for the first time and since then an odyssey had began which it could be compared only to a legal thriller, as trials follow one
another. On April 2012 a blatant case of illegal dog breeding and abuse was revealed: 27 purebred pitbulls and a dogo argentino were tied to trees among dunghills, with no shelter, without veterinary care, not being microchipped and uncontrolled reproduction. This case was covered up by the municipal authority, the responsible deputymayor totally covered up the two accused. As there was no penalization, this led to a situation in whichdozens of pitbulls are bred and are being trafficked untill today.
The members of the P.F.P.O had met a lot of obstacles:the local society is indifferent to a crime taken place for many years, animal lovers and animal welfare societies be afraid to protect the animals from the bullies fellow citizens, the Municipal Authority unwilling to put an end to this illegal situation which denigrates the region of Lavrio, a lot of months after our complaints, an autopsy was done by the Veterinary Service andit had not done anything to stop the illegal widespread dogs breeding, veterinarians covering their clients and the indifference of the policemen to make the process according to the law have composed an extremelydifficult situation.
Dozens of animals of this breed are the tragic victims who are born to live a short and suffering life.
We were not discouraged by these difficulties, in contrast we have displayed
courage and persistence for the conviction of those responsibles. The voice of these animals should be heard. Our Federation will continue its efforts to come an end to this unacceptable situation and untill the comptetent entities take their responsibilities.
