Worldwide protest for donkeys in Santorini.
10-16 June 2019: Washington, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Sydney, Berlin.
Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation (P.F.P.O.) supports the global protest of PETA, which is the largest animal rights organization in the world- in front of the Greek embassy in Washington, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Sydney, Berlin for donkeys and mules abuse, used as taxis. The protest takes place from June the 10th till June the 16th.
Last summer, a meeting with local Authorities took place in order to resolve this serious issue, following actions and a protest in the island, organized by our Federation and other animal rights bodies and organizations.
Even though there has been an improvement, it was not enough to make the change. The truth is that those animals are forced to transport tourists and their baggage, climbing up and down the 520 stairs all day, in harsh conditions and in the hot sun. At the end of the day, they have to travel a long distance in order to reach the stable while they are totally exhausted.
It should be mentioned that there are many complaints of equines abuse, which are used to transport building rubbles in the winter months.
However, it is not acceptable that in the 21th century outdated methods of transportation both for people and goods are used.
Actually, the only solution is to ban the use of donkeys as transportation mean. Alternatively, modern means of transportation should be used, as it is the case all over Europe.

Without further delay, Greek government and local Authorities should take measures in order that the use of donkeys for transportation is phased out. Also, appropriate measures should be taken for all people who are connected with this activity, in order to change their occupation.
