An urgent request by the PFPO was made to the Public Prosecutor of the Athens Lower Criminal Courts for animal protection:
In the region of Koropi, there is a farm of 365 chickens. It operates without a permit, as authorization has not been granted on procedural grounds. Even though the laying hens are healthy, they will be slaughtered.
We highlighted that the unnecessary killing of healthy animals constitutes a form of severe abuse, according to the provision of Article (24) (b) as they will not be slaughtered for sale (the slaughter will be followed by landfill).
We informed that we contacted the Veterinary Directorate of East Prefecture in Attica which states an audit to an unauthorized farm cannot be conducted without an order from the Public’s Prosecutor Office.
Taking into account the best to be done for animals, we asked that the Public Prosecutor requests the removal of the farm’s ownership (the owner agrees). So, hens are given to the PFPO after they have previously undergone a health check by competent employees of the Veterinary Directorate of East Prefecture
