Two important convictions and our great work still goes on!

Monday, 7 August, 2023Monday, 7 August, 2023
  • A woman had her dog tied up and exposed to extreme weather conditions and it suffered to death. On behalf of the PFPO, Anda Dimopoulou, a BoD’s member, was heard as a witness.
  • The second court case concerned a senior dog that was abandoned out of the dorm in Patras.

The lawyer Elena Arvaniti is mentioned in detail in these two court decisions that gave justice to animals.

On Monday, 15 May 2023, a man was found guilty by the three-member Magistrates Court in Patras because in 2018 he abandoned his senior sick dog at the dorm at the University of Patras. Despite of false witnesses, the defendant did not manage to convince that the dog was a stray, so he decided to take it to the University for its safety. Ioanna Giannakopoulou and Aristea Psouni, both volunteers and eyewitnesses, put their great efforts at the court. They had successfully refuted the accusations of the defense attorney which had been extremely offensive to the animal welfare movement!

The District Attorney’s Office was a catapult and she was clearly convinced of the offence. The Chamber President and the General Court on the right posed some important questions which made clear that they had good knowledge of the law and acute crisis. The defendant was convicted of a year of imprisonment (the limit is two years) and a financial penalty of 5.000 years.

On Tuesday, 16 May 2023 a Roma woman was found guilty by the Mixed Jury Court of Kefalonia. In August 2021 she left a puppy tied up from a barrel under the hot sun. As a result of this, the puppy suffered a tragic death.

For the second time in Greece, it was imposed a great penalty (the first time was the court case of Anagnostopoulos). An imprisonment of six years and a fine of 5.000 euros was imposed on the defendant.

It should be mentioned that it was a laborious process because the entering of appearance was accepted with great difficulty. On 17 January 2023, it took place the last court, the prosecution was dismissed.

The Chamber President proposed that the indictment changes from torture with deliberate provocation of physical exhaustion to intentional killing! The appeal had a possibility of suspension as the defendant had a clean criminal record and she was not a flight risk.
